New Barstool Sportsbook Destination for Horse-Racing Fans

A.J. Brown recently completed another project for Penn National Gaming, a client we’ve worked with in the past. Like projects completed in Illinois and Indiana, the project at Hollywood Casino in Charles Town, West Virginia, called for the conversion of an existing restaurant into Penn’s newest concept—a themed Barstool Sportsbook bar and restaurant. Brad Shelton was our Superintendent.

“We knew going in that supply chain issues had the potential to cause significant delays,” Shelton says, “so we did work on the front end of the project, proactively, to make sure procurement didn’t hold us back.” And he notes that extra time was built into the project schedule to allow for unforeseen delays.

The conversion reimagined an existing 16,000 square foot space, which includes one main level and a mezzanine. For fans wanting to keep an eye on the casino’s live thoroughbred racing, A.J. Brown installed new audio/visual systems built to support a new jumbotron screen and an additional 45 television screens. Installation of the jumbotron itself, a three-sided screen with 12-foot x 18-foot screens, was also part of the project, as were new data systems designed to provide technology support to the new bar and restaurant.

The Charles Town project also included:

  • Construction of two new, full bars
  • A new beer cooler and beer system
  • Installation of a new brick façade
  • An intricate millwork and trim package
  • Placement of new lighting and a lighting system
  • New flooring throughout, including LVT layered wood flooring and turf flooring in parts of the facility, and vinyl composition tile in high-traffic areas

The Sportsbook conversion at Hollywood Casino, including a few supply chain problems, took just seven months from beginning to end. “We like to be nimble, to stay flexible,” A.J. Brown Principal Dan Steuber says. “That strategy helps us control costs and keep our clients happy.” He adds: “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our collaboration with Penn Gaming. It’s been a pleasure to help them realize the new Barstool Sportsbook concept.”
