Casino Conversions: From Bar to Barstool Sportsbook & Bar
In 2020, Penn Gaming hired A.J. Brown to complete a series of projects that converted several existing bars to meet current design standards for its Barstool Sportsbook & Bar concept. As part of this work, we updated a Barstool Sportsbook & Bar in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and one in East Chicago, Indiana, and renovated an additional bar in Aurora, Illinois.
In the East Chicago and Lawrenceburg projects, we worked with Harmon Construction, an Indiana-based contractor, and work took place in the Ameristar Casino in East Chicago and Hollywood Casino & Hotel in Lawrenceburg, complexes that include casinos, hotels and other amenities.
“Our timeline was tight on this project,” says Daniel Steuber, Principal at A.J. Brown. “Penn Gaming wanted the work done in time to open the new bars for the 2020 fall and winter sports schedule.”
Renovations at both Indiana bars included refacing walls, ceilings and bar fronts to match the Barstool Sportsbook & Bar look. Design elements included areas of field turf, brick walls, bleachers, new flooring and a college-bar paint scheme.
As has been true with the projects A.J. Brown has completed during the pandemic, many of the needed construction materials had potentially long lead times. Steuber says, “To meet our client’s deadline, we sought out suppliers that could provide the specific materials we needed quickly.”
“I’m pleased to say the work took us two-and-a-half months to complete, and we finished on time,” says Steuber. Mike McGrew of Penn Gaming says, “It was a pleasure to work with A.J. Brown and the team. Their experience and expertise allowed us to finish the three-pronged project on time and gain market share in the region for Barstool Sportsbook & Bar.”
A.J. Brown’s partnership with Penn Gaming is ongoing. We are working with their team to review additional sites, and bring new and fresh venues to the market as states approve online sports gaming.
