A.J. Brown Transforms Commercial Space into a One-Stop Sports Destination
Scott Barron wanted to create a location where kids could swim, dance, tumble, and train all under one roof, so he turned to A.J. Brown to help transform an existing space into a brand-new state-of-the-art facility.
Reimagined and Transformed
The 26,000 square foot sports center, just off Clayton Road in Ballwin, MO, needed serious renovations to accommodate the big dreams for the newest Barron Sports location.
A.J. Brown was hired as a design build general contractor for this project, worked alongside architect Hoener Associates Inc., and used the expertise of Aquatic Design Partners to restructure the building to accommodate the new 70-by-30-foot pool.
In order to make room for a pool, the team had to design a large open concept area where kids could splash and play. That meant removing structural columns that the existing building depended on.
To do this safely, A.J. Brown engineered a solution from the bottom up. Helical piers were installed to reinforce the foundation at critical load points, allowing the team to upsize the overhead steel beams and redistribute the structural loads so the columns could come down.
Alongside the new aquatic aspect of the building, which includes an impressive dehumidification system, there are changing rooms, general offices, a dance room, and a gymnastics area, becoming the first of the Barron Sports buildings to offer dance and ninja programs.
Over half of the building features the brand new gymnastics center and dance school. But to make room for the trampoline, a pit needed to be dug, and two columns needed to be removed so kids can tumble and jump.
The gymnastics area now has a large space for floor exercises and equipment usage, also where the Ninja program is held. The dance room features a speciality wood cushioned floor system and floor-length viewing glass for spectators to watch their little ones twirl and tap.
A Facility Like Never Before
The Ballwin location became the fourth in the Barron Sports lineup, but is the only facility to offer four programs under one roof.
Barrons Sports offers expert-led classes for kids from toddlers to teens, with structured curriculums designed to build coordination, confidence, and a lifelong love of movement. The Ballwin location hosts the Swim Abilities program, a personalized private-lesson option for students with special needs. The location features modern facilities and small class sizes with instructors who undergo over 80 hours of training before leading classes.
“Scott Barron came to us with a clear vision: one facility, four programs, and no compromises on quality. That kind of ambition is exactly the type of challenge our team is built for. We’re proud to have delivered a space that will help kids learn, grow, and have fun for a long time to come.”
